Celebrate Your Freedom to Read! “Banned Book in Common" Discussion

Book clubs are great places to talk about ideas, make new friends, and share reading recommendations!

Join SBPL and community partner, UCSB History Associates , for a “Banned Book in Common” discussion about The Hate U Give (2017), by Angie Thomas. Widely used as part of high school curricula—The Hate U Give has been a target of numerous book bans and challenges.

The Hate U Give brings life to the memorable character, Starr Carter, as she finds her place and voice amid harrowing violence. A month after the book’s publication, The Atlantic said it “entered the ranks of great YA [young adult] novels.” Illuminating the Black Lives Matter movement, The Hate U Give focuses on racism, police brutality, and the endless battle for justice. The characters’ experiences with grief, fear, and tragedy on the streets and in the courtroom are central facets of a book that has been widely honored—and challenged.
