Maritime Distinguished Speaker Series: Tom Modugno “The History of Coal Oil Point”

The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum presents “The History of Coal Oil Point,” a Maritime Distinguished Speaker Series talk with local historian and GoletaHistory.com creator Tom Modugno. Devereux Point—also known as Coal Oil Point—is now a beloved surf break and walking spot, but Modugno reveals its deeper story from Chumash roots as P’ok’oy and the Rancho Dos Pueblos era to today’s nature reserve.

Using historic photos, maps, and research, he explores natural oil seeps, tar use by the Chumash, and the ranching, academic, recreational, and conservation changes that shaped this coast, connecting perfectly with SBMM’s focus on the Santa Barbara Channel.

Tickets: Free for Navigators Circle members, $10 for SBMM members, $20 for the general public, and $5 for students and educators with a valid school ID or email.

Purchase tickets below or call (805) 456-8750.
