Join us for a special presentation by nationally recognized textile artist Lucy Arai, who will explore the history and contemporary expression of sashiko—a traditional Japanese stitching technique rooted in the principle of mottainai (“waste nothing”).
In her talk, “Sashiko, Stitching to Survive,” Arai will share her personal story and creative journey through this centuries-old practice. She will guide us through sashiko’s cultural context, historical relevance, and emotional resonance, accompanied by a visual slideshow and physical examples you can touch and examine.
Presented by the Santa Barbara Fiber Arts Guild, this event is open to the public. We’ve reserved a larger space to welcome all who are curious about textile art, mending traditions, and the powerful role of handwork in cultural memory and personal resilience.
