Rope is a thrilling masterpiece of suspense and moral complexity. The play is thought to have been inspired by the real-life 1924 murders Leopold and Loeb. Two young university students, Wyndham Brandon and Charles Granillo, have murdered their fellow student and hide his body in a chest that is proudly displayed in the living room of their London home. They proceed to host a party, inviting the deceased student’s friends and family, all while the chest is in the same room as the evening’s festivities. Suspicion arises among the guests as to the contents of the chest, especially by Rupert Cadell, their very intelligent and perceptive former school master. Can Brandon and Granillo avoid getting caught? Or will their nefarious act be exposed?
