Sansum Clinic, upper State

Santa Barbara Medical Clinic Foundation

Santa Barbara Clinic was founded in 1921 by three physicians (Rexwald Brown, MD; Benjamin Bakewell, MD; and Hilmar Koefod, MD) who formed a carefully designed group practice designed to make comprehensive specialty care available to all segments of Santa Barbara at a time when solo practitioners provided most of the care.

In 1973, the physician owners transferred the clinic's assets into a new nonprofit: Santa Barbara Medical Clinic Foundation. Since that time, the foundation has contracted with the physician group for health care services, while a local board of trustees administers the foundation's work to benefit of the people of the community.
