Jaywalkers' Risk

The recent stings by Santa Barbara Police to protect pedestrians in crosswalks is a good thing.

The recent stings by Santa Barbara Police to protect pedestrians in crosswalks is a good thing. But a growing problem that really needs attention is jaywalkers. Everyone jaywalks now and then, but I have witnessed some just plain lazy, stupid, illegal, and dangerous actions.

For instance, on Chapala, between Ralphs and the Transit Center, people insist on waiting till it is barely clear to dash across the street when there is a crosswalk 20 feet away. And in the time they wait to jaywalk, they could have crossed already using the crosswalk.

This is only one of many I have witnessed. Cliff Drive, too. Carrillo, Canon Perdido, going to 24-Hour Fitness or Bay Club Fitness from the parking lots across the street. It is not only ironic but moronic.
