Police Investigating Possible Suicide By Train

Witnesses say the 59-year-old homeless man walked into the center of the tracks as a train approached.

Santa Barbara police are investigating the death of a 59-year-old homeless man as a possible suicide by train. Police have not identified the man pending notification of next of kin. But witnesses reported on Monday seeing him walking along the right side of the railroad tracks near the Santa Barbara Zoo and then moving to the center of the tracks as the train approached. Witnesses say the train blew its horn, but with no effect. The decedent’s belongings were recovered in a homeless camp about a quarter-mile away from where he was killed. Although known to police, the individual had only a handful of recent citations.
