Update: Santa Barbara Police Officer Injured in Shooting Near La Cumbre Plaza

The alleged shooter is in custody and the officer was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition following an "officer-involved shooting" on Friday morning.

[Update: Fri., May 8, 2026, 3:25 p.m.] The Santa Barbara Police Department sent a further update on what is known about the shooting at La Cumbre near State Street this morning.

A 30-year-old man identified as Mitchell Grant Grote has been arrested on the presumption of attempted murder of a police officer. He was taken into custody at La Cumbre Mall after an officer "attempted to contact" him near La Cumbre Road. He walked away, turned to face her, and "fired several shots," the Police Department release stated. The officer fired one round. Police reported that "a weapon recovered at the scene was determined to be a pellet gun."

The officer, who was not identified, was struck in the head by a pellet/BB gun projectile, taken to Cottage Hospital, and released. Grote was not struck by gunfire, according to the media release.
