Public middle and high schools in California must develop suicide prevention, intervention, and follow-up policy per legislation signed into law late last month. Policymakers hope the law will save lives; suicide is the second-leading cause of death among 10- to 24-year-olds. Policies will specifically target at-risk groups, such as disabled, mentally ill, homeless, LGBTQ, and students struggling with substance abuse.
